It’s hard to believe that just over a week ago you wouldn’t have found me at home but rather at a hospital two hours away with a little four-year-old boy (DweeMaySaw) who broke his leg. Zinmaroo (his mother’s cousin and one of my students) was taking care of him during the school break and brought him with her when she came back to take a sewing class. After they had been here a few days, he started crying in pain when they moved his leg.
After trying to guess what the problem might be, she told us that he had broken it three times already. It was hard to tell what had happened since there was no trauma, but we decided to take him to the hospital. We knew that he already had some problem because he is much too small for a four-year-old and cannot walk. Some of his bones are deformed, too. So we took him to the hospital the next morning and, after a long time between doctors and x-rays, we were admitted into the ward for two weeks. He has Osteogenesis Imperfecta (or fragile bones simply put). Some of his bones were even broken before he was born. In this case, his leg was broken in a place that could not be put in a cast, so they just put his leg up in a thing to relieve the pressure on the bone a little bit and to keep the leg stable. We weren’t sure if would be able to handle such a long time in the hospital, but we did.
Two weeks in the hospital was a long time though. Before I got there I thought that some of the greatest challenges may be in the physical realm, but it turned out to be more of a spiritual struggle. Choosing to do what the Holy Spirit was convicting me to do wasn’t always easy, but as I chose to obey, I was so thankful that I did. God did beautiful things.
For example, I was struggling to pray before going to bed (FYI, we were in a ward with no privacy), but after a few nights, I opened my eyes after prayer to see Zinmaroo praying with the little girl next to us. The next night I saw Zinmaroo praying again. What a blessing to see others being encouraged to do the same. At one point there was an SDA family next to us. Their boldness to pray really rebuked and encouraged me. Then just the fact that I had so much time on my hands was a blessing, because I was able to re-read Steps to Christ.
We now have an addition or two in our house. I was staying with DweeMaySaw and Zinmaroo in the girls’ dorm, but after a few rough nights with ants biting us we moved up here where we have fans too. Only God knows what the future holds. He could be here for only a few weeks or for a few years, but with a good diet and good care we hope to help him as much as possible.
FYI: DweeMaySaw’s parents are both working in Bangkok, and cannot come back right now (at least his mother has expressed an interest in seeing him, but said she cannot come right now). Before coming here, his grandmother was caring for him in a village about 20 minutes north of us. Please keep him and his family in prayer.
